Androgynous model about #freethenipple

Today's guest is Filip Ängelsson, a 21 years old boy from Sweden. He's currently studying graphic design and working part time as a freelance androgynous model.

I interviewed him about his recent unpleasant experience with censoring his photos, nipple approval, activism, sexuality and gender stereotypes. Read it below!

• What experience did you have with FB and censoring?

I am using FB as a means to communicate with people I’m involved with in projects, be it school or work. Sometimes I use it to keep in contact with friends that live away. In any case, because of my job as a freelance model, I have to update my pictures quite frequently.

It was a shock for me to find the best and most liked picture was reported for nudity. There was hardly any pornography, or female nudity for that matter. I am a guy after all, and my image was showing my topless torso. However the picture has been reported and removed as many times as I have uploaded it.

I’m not the only one that has suffered such unfair treatment. Fellow androgynous model Van Burnham has also talked about this issue of having his pictures taken down by FB because he was topless while in makeup.

• Why do you think there is such difference in female and male nipple approval?

I think that female nudity censorship is a leftover of women’s oppression by men. It hasn't been more than 50 years since women in the US stopped being men’s accessories. In many countries in the world women are owned by men, no matter how crazy that might sound, it’s true.

With the female liberation, so came the use of female sexuality as a means of advertisement. Nowadays most ads show this self-contradicting image of a woman that is sexy but innocent, experienced but virginal, selfless but vain.

Women have been hypersexualized so much that ads have been banned even though there was no evident nudity. I'm not surprised that the unclothed state of the female body is such a big taboo.

• Do you feel oppressed because of that?

Of course I do. It’s such a double standard. My summer photos with me in the beach enjoying the sun while wearing just swimming trunks are perfectly fine to be published on FB, but the moment there is red lipstick, eyeliner, mascara and flowy hair, my photo is inappropriate? I just don't get it. What changed?

• How important activism is to you?

It actually depends on the kind of activism. In most cases such as human rights (including female rights, gay rights, racial rights) I'm all for it.
But if things get too out of control then it is safe to say it’s no longer activism, but fanaticism instead.

• Could you describe yourself as a feminist? Why so?

Yes, absolutely. One would have to be a blithering idiot not to be a feminist. An activism that promotes the equality of sexes is something that should be embraced by everyone. Men and women alike.

In such a male dominated society, where for example being vulnerable and emotional is deemed as a feminine trait, both men and women are at a disadvantage. Men end up building up all of these emotions inside them to the point that makes them a ticking bomb ready to explode, just because they are afraid of being devalued and made fun of. And women are always being criticized for being themselves. It’s a situation where everyone loses if they don't support feminism.

• What tips do you have for men in same situation as you were in?

Good question Agnes. In case they don't care about their account being terminated, then they should respect the service’s rules and guidelines, even though they might be unfair. If they want to go against the system, then they can by all means continue what they do. That’s my advice.

You never know, if more guys took the time to create such intriguing pictures of themselves where they have the face of a girl and the body of a boy, perhaps the page’s moderators would make their rules fairer.

• What's your opinion on stereotypical masculinity and on the other side male femininity? Is there an issue?

Stereotypical masculinity disgusts me actually. Because one can see that the men that exhibit and perpetuate it are not comfortable with what they're doing. It’s merely a grotesque façade that supposedly protects them from judgement and gives them a free pass in life.

To me, male femininity is just embracing one’s humanity. Who came up with the idea that long blonde hair, painted nails, big lips, and voluminous eyelashes are something only women should have and enjoy? Or to want to be kind and gentle to others. When did these traits become something men should avoid so that they won’t be deemed feminine?

Concepts such as femininity and masculinity are artificial. For example, before Hitler came in power, pink was for boys and blue was for girls. Such things got reversed after that dictator left his mark worldwide with the homosexual holocaust were gays were distinguished by a pink triangle on their arm. Another example is how high heeled shoes were an exhibit of masculinity and status in French Renaissance. The height of the heel was equivalent to one’s status. At first such shoes were sported only by male royalty but soon women wanted to adopt a more androgynous fashion, and so they also started wearing high heels.

• So, being feminine doesn't mean you're gay?

Of course not. Sexuality, gender identity, and personality traits are three completely different things. People come in all different kinds of forms, colors, personalities. Just because most known gay men happen to act very feminine, doesn't mean that anyone that is feminine is also gay.

There are men that have hairy muscular bodies, watch football and drink beer, and are acting like the typical idea of a man, but they still get turned on by other men and identify as gay. There are women out there that are so feminine that one would describe them as the ideal straight female, yet they are gay.

• How does one become confident in their own skin.

The most important thing to do, but also most difficult one, is to stop caring about the opinions of others and surround themselves with people that love them unconditionally. If the latter is difficult, then they should start spending more time in front of the mirror, and only compliment themselves on the things they like about themselves. No negativity at all. Eventually they will be able to embrace their individuality and learn to love their image.

I'm no expert though, as I am still struggling with such a task. But I feel positive that I am in a very good route towards accomplishing it. I believe that eventually this is how one becomes confident in their own skin.

Improve your style!

To be honest, I've always disliked UGG boots, maybe because of the fact every basic b*tch in Ljubljana owns at least a pair. Those kind of trends are stupid to me, because love for them doesn't come from genuine adoration but from a wish to show off money and to be 'it girl'. It shows a lack of creativity, taste, confidence. If they weren't a trend I maybe would get a pair.

I've been thinking about my attitude to trends and popular pieces. I don't want to follow them. Yes. I'd rather be a trendsetter myself. I refuse to buy a pair of white Converse or an Armani plastic bag for example. But is it even good for me to limit myself like that, does it even show any kind of power or qualities? Sometimes you profit the most when you overcome your limits and give the thing you would normally never chose a go! That way you can really discover new exciting hobbies, meet interesting people, improve your style.

It's spring so I obviously  cannot wear boots anymore, so I decided to get a pair of UGG sandals. It was a challenge to combine it in my style, but I'm really happy to own them now. I discovered another side of me that can get a bit more preppy and romantic. First, they're so comfortable and easy to walk in, but I also think they would look great with most of my clothes, I just have to combine it right. I think I did a good job, what do you think?

Do you like them? What are the things you would never ever wear? Comment below, I'm more than interested to know!

I also wanted to share my recent discovery with you. While searching for my prom dress I came across a cute web store Sherry London. They sell cocktail party dresses, evening and prom dresses plus much more. All the productions that you need in their website are custom made, which could let you get the goods suitable. I wish I could attend more evening events and be wearing some of the dresses I found dozens of gorgeous dresses that remind me of the latest Rodarte FW 15/16 collection on NYFW (photo below).

I much admit there is a fine line between looking cheap and expensive, but I believe it's a matter of how you combine the dress for example. The dress I like the most is the third blue one. It's such a shame being a Barbie has a bad sound to it, it should be the opposite - it's a lot of hard work, talent and a good eye to look like an expensive one. I've been loving vintage dresses lately, especially the ones by Gianni Versace from the 90s and these dresses below seem like a modern and cheaper version you can get for your special occasion.

Here are some of my favourites:

I wish you all a successful week and good luck to the ones who are taking matura essay on Tuesday, we'll rock it!

My Prom

I decided to share these personal photos with you because I believe I hadn't posted a photo of my family before. It was an amazing evening with my loved ones. I'm aware of the fact I'm a lucky girl to have such an amazing and inspiring family and Gal, my ex-schoolmate who danced with me. I had so much fun I couldn't stop laughing. Reality :)

It saddens me a little when I realize I'm growing and that we won't be together for long and that I'll leave Gimnazija Bežigrad in 2 months. But on the other side I'm looking forward to experiencing new things.

Nace (my brother) on the left, Gal (my friend) on the right

My family - I wanted us to be dressed in monochrome! #stylishmoments

I had a privilege to wear a dress just off the runway. It's a transparent silk & linen dress by Janja Videc Clothing that was presented at Ljubljana Fashion week last Wednesday. It's my dream dress. Not only I think it looks super gorgeous but I also felt comfortable and confident in it, which is really important. Since I'm not a classic girl I still wanted to keep a detail that wasn't expected. So I put on those white chunky plastic boots, a stone necklace from Janja Videc's new collection and minimal evening makeup.

Father's dance

I did my mum's makeup, she's such a youthful lady. I'm glad I have her smile. :)

Wishing you a fabulous week!

Best of Ljubljana Fashion Week

Ljubljana Fashion Week. Fall-Winter 15/16. 4 days. 10 shows. 20 brands and designer students.

The shows I attended:
Irina Tosheva
Milica Vukadinović
MARINADESIGN
Natasa Persuh
Ivan Rocco
Petja Zorec
Dajana Ljubičić
Young@Squat
NTF students of 4th & 5th year
Sofia Nogard
Miro Misljen
Akultura

DAY 1
I sadly missed the first day of #LJFW, it's hard to manage school and work as a blogger.

DAY 2
I was wearing an iridescent mermaid outfit by a British designer duo Dry Cry:

My favourite collection of the day was HAIDUK by Milica Vukadinovic. The show was on point- strong beat, fierce masculine walk, killer look. The collection was inspired by rebellious street boys of upper class who set their own rules. Fierce, bold, mysterious, attractive.
No surprise, this show was by far one of the best ones!

DAY 3
We with Ajda Podgoršek were wearing a new collection of Quirky Me:
Purple biker jacket (get here)
Holographic skirt (get here)
PVC clear jacket (get here)
2-piece dress (get here)
Fur bag (get here)

Petja Zorec rocked it with a super wearable but still with a modern aesthetic twist. The collection is inspired by a life circle, from birth to death, flowers. Sensitive, detailed, soft. I especially liked how the outfits were paired with Teva x Petja Zorec amazing new socks collection and Teva Original sandals. I would wear it all.

Ivan Rocco never disappoints. His new collection called My Giovanni contains only few staple pieces, it's oriented to a courageous woman who isn't afraid to wear unusual material combinations. How chic!

Day 4
I was wearing a cut out dress by Janja Videc Clothing - Clothing Alchemy collection (Get it here)!

Wednesday was crazy good! First I attended NTF students' shows. There were two designers that always take my breath away, Sara Valenci and Janja Videc.

Sara Valenci: collection VASILIJ Hi-Fi
No need to ramble, I think her designs speak themselves. Her colour combinations seem a bit odd but act in her favour as this is the main point- to be bold. Sara also won Elle prize for the best collection. Congratulations!

Janja Videc
The collection plays with vision of a modern witch. The materials are unusually natural, from wool, silk to linen. She's famous for her own cuts, which are always sharp, innovative and minimalist. Her colour palette varies within monochrome shades, but this time she incorporated also some earthy browns.

Janja Videc is one of my favourite Slovenian designers. I was wearing one of her dresses for my friend's prom and let me reveal a secret, I'll be wearing one of her designs from the new collection today on my prom! Can you guess which one?

Janja won a prize of Ljubljana Fashion week for the best collection and was awarded a solo show in next season! Congratulations!

Akultura - collection AKULTURA ART. Voluminous collection that was inspired by painting. Slightly androgynous and sporty, I bet the jackets will be a hit!

Photo: Robert Ribič and Klemen Razinger

I think it was an amazing event. Even though Slovenian market is small and demands simple, classic, comfortable and rather sporty, wearable designs there were some for all. From extreme Matic Veler pieces, chic and feminine PRINCIP, minimalist Janja Videc, business SENS to sporty Akultura or KICK by Olimpija. It's a shame some cannot take what they're given and criticize the event because the budget isn't comparable to luxurious and gigantic events like Paris Fashion Week. I think it's crucial to have an opportunity like this to see what this market has to offer, because at the end, Slovenian designers easily compared internationally. Don't spend all your money for Zara's crappy China made clothes, now you don't have any excuse more for not buying Slovenian designs.

Hugs and kisses,
Agnes Xx

Dark chick

This week has been the most amazing week this year so far. I'm realizing I've made a huge progress at blogging and I've been noticed by a few very influential people. No worries, I'll remain down to earth. :) I believe it's important to value yourself; by saying "I'm not so special", "Chill, I'm really average" or any of those craps you're downgrading yourself.

This post wasn't planned, Roberto caught me in city centre and we spontaneously took some photos. Again in this dress, right? Well, I refuse to be one of those bloggers who wear a new outfit each day. I believe it's important to know how to mix and match, not only to shop till you drop. It's always a challenge and I'm loving it!
You can see how I styled the dress in a winter posts below:

It's official, I'll be attending Ljubljana Fashion Week (12.-15. April 2015). I'll wear 3 amazing outfits by my favourite designer brands at the moment:

We're also working on an editorial for Quirky Me's new collection featuring gorgeous Ajda Podgoršek (ajdapodgorsek.blogspot.com) and myself. The photos were taken by one and only, Robert Ribič.

Q&A Part 2

Which primary school did you go to? Can you show us the dress you wore for your junior prom aka valeta?
I went to OŠ Šentvid (6 years) and to OŠ Toneta Čufarja (3 years) because we moved.
I designed, tailored and sewed the dress myself. I took sewing classes for that purpose.

About fashion & beauty events that you attend: Where do you find out about them, are you invited?
I get invited by PR or directly by the CEOs by email. :) I'm honestly flattered I get noticed so frequently and that major Slovenian companies such as Afrodita want me at their events.

Do you have any tips on how to start writing a blog?
Just do it. First, sit down and write some points about your expectations and goals (who are you targeting, what content, how frequently, at what budget, monthly and yearly check points, ...). Do NOT hesitate, everyone starts with nothing. Be original, be the first or the best, be yourself, be honest. Make up your unique blog name. Visualize what you want it to be in one year. Think in future.

What foundations for pale skin do you recommend?
I cannot recommend any product without knowing your skin type, budget, exact skin colour, wished coverage, ... But I can say I've been using Parisax in shade Ivory (buy here), Ben Nye Matte HD in shades Shinsei and Shinsei Fair (buy in Kabuki Makeup Place Ljubljana), MUA matte foundation in shade 1 and Loreal True Match in shade C1 and I'm loving them!

Source: Google

What body features and characteristics do you like the most about yourself?
Eyes, bone structure, hight, legs, neck, smile (but I love my sharp look even more haha). Sincerity, inner strength, optimism, active mind, fierceness, will power, loyalty, warmness. Capricorns rock!

Best coffee shop in Ljubljana?
I don't have it. I love places which offer plant milk and aren't too popular. My favourite place where I go study alone is Kavarna pri vodnjaku on Stari trg. :)

Favourite places you've been to?
Amsterdam, London, Lisbon, Fiji, French Polynesia, Italian Alps.

How do you keep your armpits neat?
I trim them every week to no more than 1 cm, let's say. :) It's not unhygienic at all, I shower and use Nelipot deodorant as everybody does I believe. Now it matches my hair and I think it's super pretty!
I got tons of questions about other body parts but I think it's too personal and none of your business. I'm not a spokesperson for all-natural body obviously, I do what I find cute and right for me at that time.

Why so many photos of unshaven armpits?
That's the reason- I want our society to become comfortable with it. It's a problem that people only see my hair when they look at the picture above even though it's barely there.
If we want to change things we must shock so people are confused and don't know what to think about it. When their mind is blank we can 'reprogram' them to become more open minded and accepting. :) I'm not trying to make you like it, I'm trying to make you accept it as a part of my free choice.

Why did you even start growing your pit hair back?
I'd been following a few Instagram girls (Charlie Barker and others) who have it too for a while and at one point it seemed natural for me too.

Why did you shave off your brow tails?
Because I like my face to look that way. I draw in eyebrows much more upwards, that makes the illusion of lifted and fiercer face which I couldn't achieve with eyebrows what down turned. The new brow look makes my eye area more opened, lightened, I have a bigger surface for painting, I can play and draw different brows each day (straight, very high brow, very arched, long, short,...). I feel so free.

How long do the drawn on brow ends stay in place?
When set with powders it stays on for a whole day! It also depends on which products I use. Pencils and waxy creams last much longer than cakes.

Do you use an eyeshadow base?
I don't use it for every day but I do use MAC Soft ochre Paint pot. Most of the time I think it's enough if I just set my lids with a bit of transparent powder.

How do you succeed doing so many things at the same time?
Where is motivation there is power. I organize myself by doing daily, weekly and monthly plans and check-lists.

Do you have any pet?
No I don't. I used to have a guinea pig called Cookie.

Favourite bands?
Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Vaccines, Alice in chains, Soundgarden, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Hole, The Verve, ...

Do you like kids?
In general- no.

How many lipsticks do you own?
Around 60 without lip stains, lip liners and fat pencils.

Where do you thrift shop in Ljubljana? How can you find such amazing pieces?
Most of my thrifted clothes are from Textile house, it's right on The Dragon's bridge. I regularly exchange clothes with my friends and thrift when I travel. Best thrift shops I've found: East End London (Stepney Green) and small vintage shops in Amsterdam's old city centre.
Best tip? Ask them when they get new shipping and be there first. Think outside the box.

Does The Front Row Shop re-sell old colections, where can I get the grey lacquered skirt that you have http://agneskrown.blogspot.com/2014/10/monochrome-goofiness.html ?
I'm afraid you won't be able to shop it ever again, it's sold out.

How do you get free makeup and clothes?
First of all, they're not gifts plus at the end I don't get them for free. I do collaborations, it's a business relationship where both sides mutually profit. I carefully choose who I work with. I post only the best products, the ones I'm not happy with kindly reject to promote online. The photos of new stuff I post on Instagram and FB are a part of my business. Think from a brander's perspective. I don't have sugar daddies, it's work and the products are a part of my payment.

How do you pay when you shop online?
With PayPal if it's international.

When did you stop growing?
I guess I was about 15, 16 years old. I grew pretty fast, around 13cm in one year from the smallest girl in my class to the tallest.

You said once that you wish you were 182cm tall. Why?
The taller the better.

How do you remove peach fuzz?
I have some serious problems with peach fuzz. As a fan of full coverage makeup I first need to have a silky smooth surface. It prevents uneven application, patchy skin, difficulties in blending.
I've used various products. I tried face wax, it makes my skin breakout. A huge no go! Now I remove it with a hair removing face cream by Afrodita (that one, click!) once a few weeks when needed. If I'm in hurry I will use a face and brow razor. I think there's a horrible lack of information about hair removing tips on the internet, especially in video or photo form. Are people really ashamed about their body and facial hair?

Which lipsticks are you wearing on the photos below?

Inglot palette lipstick in 95 (good lighting does miracles, it's just a reflection):

Essence Soft berry lip pencil all over, random black eyeliner to outline, NYX mega shine lipgloss in 106:

Inglot palette lipstick in 95:

Do you even notice any special girls that aren't as tall as you?
Sure I do. Honestly, I love tall girls. But it isn't always the case. I don't like to generalize...
Mind that: It's more about the energy and less about eyebrows on fleek.

Aren't you afraid to damage your hair even more by dying it dark?
No. I trust my hairdresser. Dark was actually a great solution because the dye protected it from being dry and from breakage. Plus, I got a special treatment called Micro Mist which repaired my hair veeeeeeery much, it's not even that bad any more. :D Viki's place rocks!!!

How did you get your hair that white: https://instagram.com/p/suozlBSZXS/ ?
I've already told you that I bleached it twice with peroxide 9% and dyed it grey with Subrina permanent hair dye. Then the dye washed out and it was snow white.

Where did you shoot this post http://agneskrown.blogspot.com/2014/10/motel-rocks-and-so-do-i.html ?
Roberto took me to abandoned train station on Parmova street, I think the building has already been demolished.

Favourite film?
Blue is the warmest color (La vie d'Adele). I've seen it multiple times and I'm still crying like a baby. I rarely cry.

I also loved Never let me go, Jeune & jolie, Les Intouchables, Gia, The Black swan.
